I do not want to start insulin. My friend who started insulin now has to stay on it forever.

I'm 30 years old and nobody in my family has diabetes. Reading the info here got me worried. When is the good time to get tested for diabetes? Should I do it once a year? Can I just ask my doctor to test me? Thanks.
Answer: 
I would suggest that you take the Risk Assessment on our website. According to the American Diabetes Association, those without known risks for diabetes should be screened beginning at age 45.
