Question:
Having a family history of diabetes, what can african americans do to prevent heart disease or stroke and other diabetes complications?
Answer:

Having a family history of diabetes significantly raises your risk for developing diabetes. Having diabetes is also likely to raise the risk for heart diasease and stroke by 2-3 times. Losing weight, controlling diabetes, eating right, exercising and taking appropriate medications to control blood pressure and cholesterol are all part of prevention. But to do this, you will need a teamwork of health care providers and personal support from family and friends.
