I do not want to start insulin. My friend who started insulin now has to stay on it forever.

I'm 82yrs having carotid artery surgery blockage 90%. surgan wants metforman stopped why?
Answer:
Metformin should not be used around the time of surgery. This is a common practice and it can be restarted after the surgical procedure. Another concern might be your kidney function. There is a certain cutoff for kidney function below which the use of metformin is not safe. It could lead to lactic acidosis, a condition that is dangerous for your health. You should discuss this issue further with your doctor to see if metformin is still right for you.
