I do not want to start insulin. My friend who started insulin now has to stay on it forever.

Question:
In August, I developed back , hip and leg pain and stopped taking metformin for my Type II diabetes thinking the pain may have been caused by the metformin. At the time, I started taking Aleve for the pain and found that my sugar levels were between 100 - 126 without metformin. Have there been any studies done as to the effectiveness of Aleve for diabetes? Thank you
Answer:
The class of medicine for Aleve is not known to affect glucose control.  Its cousin, salicylates, have been known to affect glucose levels for over a hundred years.  In fact, Joslin is currently doing research (TINSAL-CVD) to study the effect of salycylic acid on diabetes.  Please remember it is being studied for safety and efficacy.  Taking these types of medications for the purpose of controlling blood glucose is not advised until there is sufficient data.
