Good evening.
I had gestation diabetes when I was pregnant with my first child, but not with my second child. I heard that if you do have gestation diabetes, you are much more likely to get Diabetes Type 2 in your later years. What are the statistics on this? Thank you.
Answer:
You are correct. However the good news is if you could lose 10% of your pre-pregnancy weight in the first year following delivery, you can significantly reduce your chance for developing type 2 diabetes. Of course, diabetes prevention is after all a life long effort. Balance diet, regular exercise and weight reduction are all important and necessary steps towards good health. If nothing is done, the statistics tell us that individuals with gestational diabetes have 50% chance for developing type 2 diabetes in 15 years.
