Question:
I do not want to start insulin. My friend who started insulin now has to stay on it forever.
Answer:
This is true to all patients with type 1 diabetes and partially true to certain people with type 2 diabetes. For patients with type 1 diabetes, the body does not produce insulin and so will need insulin replacement to survive. For some patients with type 2 diabetes, usually those who have it more than 10 years, may need insulin injection because of the natural progression of diabetes where the body loses insulin production gradually. Blood glucose levels will then be consistently higher despite the best effort to control through oral medications, food and exercise.
However, there are cases when the doctor decides to start insulin temporarily to help patients first bring down very high levels of blood glucose, giving time for patients to work on nutrition and lose weight for those who are overweight, and then resume oral medications and lifestyle management after the blood glucose levels drop back down to a safer range.
While having to start insulin injections may seem like an impossible treatment to live with, the act of injection is actually of minimal pain and many patients find it, non-threatening and less painful when compared to checking blood glucose. Most importantly, the beneficial results of controlling blood glucose levels with insulin highly outweigh the cost of the medication and going through the trouble daily injection.
